Biography

A Rhythm and Blues artist can only go through so much joy and pain before it begins to seep into his work. The new CD by Fathead Davis titled “Second Chances” is an auto-biography of his personal setbacks and triumphs.

Dav “Fathead” Davis is known for his soulful vocals and electric piano chops. Those skills were not developed overnight. He has been rocking church services, Juke joints, and concert halls for over 30 years. He knows the highs of performing in front of thousands. But 18 month’s after the release of his first solo CD, “Broke ...Black...Blue”, personal trouble hit him hard.

After performing over 250 shows in the Midwest in 2005 in support of his début album, trouble came knocking that October. “I lost my granddaddy. That was rougher than rough”Fathead explains “ It really hurt me bad. That man was my personal Superhero. He bought me my first organ, and keep me around instruments. I thought losing him was enough for a man to go through in a 12 month period, but little did I know” he laughs.

The southern folk have always said the hard times come in threes. This could’ve never been more true, than in case of Fathead. On January 16th, 2 days after performing at the now defunct East Side Inn located in Cincinnati Ohio, Fathead was rushed to the hospital with what was thought to be a kidney stone. After an MRI it was discovered that his colon had ruptured and he was rushed to surgery. He awoke the next morning with 54 staples in his chest and a colostomy bag connected to his stomach. He would go on to spend 2 months in the hospital.

To make things worse, he had no means to support his family, and had to wait until his second surgery in May to remove his bag before attempting to perform again. The artist who had brought smile to so many faces had been shut down by the bad luck blues.“Some folks play the blues. Well let me tell you, I had to live them. I had never been so happy and so sad all at once. At the beginning, I was mad as hell, I couldn’t understand why things happen to me. But It turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Before I was sick, I was working every single night. I never got A break. When I got sick, all I had was time to reflect and write. It dawned on me during this period That the good Lord gave me a Second Chance”. After all the doctor said I would’ve been dead in just a few more hours.

Dav “Fathead” Davis hit the stage again in May 2006 . His infectious smile is bigger than ever. Make no mistake about it, his funky fingers and big blues vocals will still make your Hip pocket jump outta of socket. The next time you’re feeling bad and need a dose of uplifting rhythm, blues and soul, you should go see Fathead Davis testify!
